Qualify For Change
A Documentary Film
Katrena is a formerly incarcerated woman in the process of re-entering society. Her upbringing in one of most dangerous neighborhoods in Queens and lack of parental and community support, led her to a life of crime at a young age, and she has spent the bulk of her life in jail. While in jail for the third time Katrena began to understand that she could "Qualify for Change." She realized she had to find a way of changing her destructive habits into positive choices or risk dying in jail. With the help of several programs dedicated to assisting formerly incarcerated people re-enter society, Katrena has cultivated an incredibly positive outlook on life. She is articulate, intelligent and inspiring, and dreams of creating a magazine to reach out to at-risk, and incarcerated youth, providing them with healthy, positive and profitable life-skills as an alternative to a life of drug dealing, drug abuse and prostitution as a means of survival. We follow her experience of pursuing this dream.
